A growing number of people are taking on second jobs in order to earn some much-needed extra cash. Many people are looking for evening work, in addition to their day job, so that they can maintain their lifestyles. In these austere times, people are finding themselves unexpectedly having to deal with a change in their financial circumstances, for example, after splitting up with a partner. Others are just trying to cope with a rise in the cost of living.
Latest figures from the Office of National Statistics suggest that over one million people in the UK have an extra job.
Xenios Thrasyvoulou, founder of the website People Per Hour, agrees: "Second job seekers is our fastest growing sector. It's doubled in the last 12 months" (BBC, Feb 2013). The type of people who are taking on second jobs is also becoming more varied, he says. "It is anything from students to retirees, and anyone in between. Mum
entrepreneurs, or stay-at-home mums, is a big community on the website.
Many are actually on maternity leave."
