Dolman travel book of the year winner announced

The Authors' Club announced last night (7 July) that Rachel Polonsky has won the Dolman Travel Book of the Year 2011 award for Molotov's Magic Lantern: Uncovering Russia's Secret History.

Rachel Polonsky was a Cambridge fellow in Russian literature before moving to Moscow in the mid-1990s. In her apartment block near the Kremlin, she discovered papers belonging to a former Soviet foreign minister and an old-fashioned slide projector. These finds prompted her to write Molotov's Magic Lantern (Faber), a travelogue through Russia's recent history.

The other titles shortlisted for this year's Dolman prize were: Dreaming in HIndi, Katherine Russell Rich (Portobello); Drinking Arak off an Ayatollah's Beard, Nicholas Jubber (Da Capo Press); Germania, Simon Winder (Picador); Parisians, Graham Robb (PIcador) and The Last Resort, Douglas Rogers (Shortbooks).

The Dolman prize, set up in 2006, is one of three literary awards run by The Authors' Club. It is the only UK travel literature award in the UK.
